In all honesty: for me the idea of maybe for the first time maintaining remote servers via a connection without a fixed ip addressįeels kind of weird. At that client we even used servers and always-on desktops to remotely wake-up all the other the desktops during the weekends via wake-on-lan when we were doing our quarterly maintenance for that client.īut we still had VPN and fixed ip's on that locations. We have also setup Teamviewer (host) at different clients, one of them a former client with 3 locations and around 50 desktops. We use Teamviewer QS when supporting our clients desktops and laptops. Now, we do have some experience with Teamviewer. The company people themselves don't need to login remotely now or during the foreseeable future, nor do they want to.
(Apart from a Port Forwarded surveillance camera harddiskrecorder I'd rather see gone today then any later) I use VPN to login and maintain the servers and workstations. The only thing that really needs an external ip at that client is me. (The midtier 500/500 with good SLA costs around $6370 more over the course of 3 years, which they might find a bit to steep) Now to the question: Should client number 1 decide the 500/500 option is just to expensive, the cheapest option might be an alternative for this client. A 5 times faster internet connection then 100/100 would really help their daily operations. At both companies we used cached DropBox Business, cached Office 365 mailboxes and Veeam VBR server and Workstation back-ups. Now, I am going to advise this, and another client on the same terrain, to go for at least a mid-tier option with 500/500 bandwith, better SLA and fixed ip address. The ISP offers one lowend 100/100 Mbit option without a fixed ip address which, compared to the lowend 100/100 connection with a fixed ip address, is around $1000 cheaper over the minimum contract term of three years. Right now, one of my clients can upgrade their internet connection from bonded VDSL 150 Down/50Up to business fibre. Think of equipment, webservers, on-premises exchange servers, that kind of reasons. For the past decade all of our clients of which we are remotely maintaining their IT environment have needed an internet connection with a fixed ip address for one reason or another.
